Wood

Wood: players across the field
Given the region's extensive forest area covering over 70,000 hectares made up of 49% softwood trees and 51% hardwood trees, the logging potential is strong particularly for Douglas fir.

Auvergne covers every stage of the sector: logging with over 250 companies, the sawmills with 198 companies and the second largest wood transformation business with 1,946 companies including a furniture centre of which Combelle, the European leader in children's furniture, a house building centre and a complementary paper-card domain.

Training and technology transfer
The region has an array of adapted training facilities with 17 schools and training centres in the wood profession ranging from the CAP (vocational training qualification) to engineer qualifications given by ENITA, École Nationale d’Ingénieurs des Travaux Agricoles (school of agricultural engineering), ENGREF, École Nationale du Génie Rural, des Eaux et des Forêts (school of rural, water and forest engineering) and Polytech’Clermont-Ferrand (Institute of engineering sciences).

Auvergne Promobois, an association of the different professions pooling representatives of all the wood-related lines of business, provides technical support to companies. The technology transfer is provided by the technology platform Forbois@uvergne.
