A highly diversified sector
Auvergne has an extremely diversified economic fabric in terms of Information Technology: software package developers and integrators, 2D and 3D multimedia designers, design and development of man/machine interface development, search engines and cartographic interfaces, IT and telecom security, R & D into magnetic systems, etc.
In all over 700 companies work in these fields some of which are market leaders such as Numtech, specialised in atmospheric environment modelling. The ICT sector represents 8,140 jobs and the Pardieu site in Clermont-Ferrand alone groups nearly 1,000 people. The telecommunication services are the biggest employers, followed by IT services, more particularly with the sale of software and engineering and consultancy.
A region eager to uphold the sector
The regional authorities have invested heavily in order to support the territory's ICT development. Auvergne is thus the top region in France in terms of broadband coverage: by 2010, 99.6% of households will have access to broadband, thanks to the installation of 860 km of optical fibres performed via a public and private partnership.
In parallel, the players of the sector have just formed a cluster, Auvergne TIC, particularly designed to develop the region's global offering on the market.
Training and research
In addition to an array of adapted teaching, from A-levels + 1 year of further education to A-levels + five years of further education, the region has a specialised engineering school, Institut Supérieur d’Informatique, de Modélisation et de leurs Applications (ISIMA (graduate engineering school focused on computing and its applications)). It also offers efficient research with two laboratories of European renown: Laboratoire d’Informatique, de Modélisation et d’Optimisation des Systèmes (LIMOS
Finally, a dedicated business park, Pascalis, hosts enterprises thanks to its business incubator and hotel.
